Health, Wellness and Prevention Services supports students in developing a balanced and healthy lifestyle. We believe in creating a healthier campus-community for learning, living, working and playing. We enhance student success through faculty partnerships, co-curricular opportunities, internships, peer health education and strong professional staff. We offer a variety of wellness and prevention programs each year that are targeted at the most common concerns and interests facing college students:
Alcohol and other drugs
Sexual assault prevention
Our professional staff are available to answer questions, discuss wellness issues, or provide students with referral to campus and community resources.
Tricia's path to her dream job as the Director of Health, Wellness, and Prevention Services at EWU began with stints in public health and K-12 education. Through these experiences, she designed health communication strategies, implemented evidence-based prevention and environmental programs, facilitated community processes and collaborations, provided professional development, and worked to radiate possibility and positivity. She will try most things once, which places her in fun experiences such as dance-offs and dunk tanks and highlights her sense of humor. She is a self-proclaimed coffee-aholic and dark chocolate connoisseur, who is passionate about physical activity and can be found outside with her family bike riding, skiing, hiking, golfing, or paddling. Tricia is a commissioner on the Cheney Park and Recreation Board, and serves as a board member for Let's Move Cheney, Step Up and Go, and The Greater Spokane Substance Abuse Council.
Health Education Coordinator
Having received her bachelor's degree from Eastern Washington University, Laura was overjoyed to return to a familiar eagle community as an employee. Her path to becoming the Health Education Coordinator at Health, Wellness and Prevention Services at EWU began as a health educator in Spokane County for a non-profit. Within this position Laura gained valuable experience instructing community-based health education including tobacco cessation, parenting classes, CPR, first aid, employee wellness, and health coaching. She hopes people will remember her as someone that is reliable, organized and doesn't take life too seriously, laughter is good for the soul. She has competed and placed top five in three NPC fitness competitions, enjoys photography, thinks peanut butter is the greatest, and slightly addicted to Pinterest. Laura participates on the Prevent Suicide Spokane Coalition and Youth Prevention Marijuana and Tobacco Coalition.
Laurie has been at EWU for 14 years, with the last 11 of those years in Health, Wellness & Prevention Services. Laurie enjoys working with students and other departments on campus. Most days you can find Laurie in her office answering questions on programs the department provides to campus, as well as speaking with students and parents about the student health clinic services offered through Rockwood. In her spare time, you can find Laurie in her craft room designing and making paper flowers and various paper crafts, spending time with her 3 grown children and spoiling her grandchildren. Laurie participates with the Collegiate Preparedness Workgroup.
