WHAT IS EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY EARLY HEAD START?

• $1.7 million per year federal grant
• Serves a minimum of 116 low-income pregnant women, infants and toddlers in home-based and center-based program options in Ferry, Stevens and Pend Oreille counties (the Tri-Counties of Northeast Washington).  See Service Area Map
• Employs approximately 30 full time EWU staff members, over 80% live and work in the Tri-Counties plus additional part-time   employees and subcontractors
• EWU has provided Early Head Start Services in the Tri-Counties   since 1998.
• Based on the needs of each family, EWU EHS partners with parents and other community agencies to provide and coordinate a wide range of services.

Since 1992, Eastern Washington University (EWU) has provided high quality comprehensive services to families with infants and toddlers in Ferry, Stevens and Pend Oreille Counties.

WHAT EARLY HEAD START SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE?

EWU Early Head Start provides year-round services including:

Parent education and support

• Health
• Nutrition
• Parenting skills
• Regular social events
• Referrals to other services and agencies
• Family goal setting

Infant and toddler health and nutrition

• Hearing screenings and referrals
• Nutrition screenings by a registered dietician
• Vision screenings and referrals
• Immunization tracking
• Well Child Exam tracking
• Connecting families with a medical provider
• Connecting infants and toddlers with a dental home

Infant and toddler development

• Developmental screenings for infants and toddlers
• Individualized services for each child
• Staff trained in early childhood education
• Healthy attachment and bonding

Coordinated services for children with disabilities

Prenatal and post-partum education and support

 

WHERE DO FAMILIES RECEIVE SERVICES?

Home-based

Families can receive year-round Early Head Start services in their own home in:

• Stevens County
• Ferry County
• Pend Oreille County

Center-based

Infants and toddlers can receive services at the child development center in:

• Colville (morning and afternoon sessions)

The Colville EHS Center is open year-round, Monday - Thursday.

 

WHO CAN RECEIVE EARLY HEAD START SERVICES?

EWU EHS serves:

• Pregnant women
• Infants
• Toddlers (up to age 3 years)

Early Head Start is a voluntary federal program for low income families (determined by the federal poverty guidelines).

Families above the federal poverty level may be eligible if they:

• Have a foster child
• Have a child with special needs or a disability
• Live outside the city limits of Colville, Newport, Chewelah or Kettle Falls (by special permission of regional Office of Head Start)
